As a partner in the recent state-wide Write Michigan short story contest, Capital Area District Libraries is proud to announce that five of the ten winners hail from the greater Lansing area. Each winner received a cash prize as well as publication in a collection produced by Schuler Books’ Chapbook Press. Their stories are currently posted at WriteMichigan.org.

Write Michigan is a project that encourages kids, teens and adults to explore the art of writing by crafting and submitting an original short story. Nearly 900 entries were received in the current contest, which was open for submissions from Sept. 3-Nov. 30, 2013.

In January 2014, winning entries were chosen by celebrity judges, including Lansing area authors Deborah Diesen (The Pout-Pout Fish), Ruth McNally Barshaw (the Ellie McDoodle series) and Lori Nelson Spielman (The Life List). Entries were also published online so that Readers’ Choice prizes could be chosen.  Prizes will be awarded at a ceremony on Saturday, March 22, at the Kent District Library Kentwood Branch.

CADL promoted the project in our branches, on our website, and by contacting local schools and homeschool groups.  Other sponsors include Kent District Library in west Michigan, Meijer, Schuler Books & Music, and Pooh’s Corner bookstore.

With 13 branches and a Bookmobile, Capital Area District Libraries serve 23 municipalities in Ingham County. Its mission is to empower our diverse communities to learn, imagine and connect. For information about hours, services or events, call 517-367-6300, or visit cadl.org.

Congratulations to (back row, l to r): Chloe Lewis from Holt, Jackie Guzman from Okemos, Tyler Barnes from Lansing, (front row): Sarah Hoogstraten and Mary Bonnell (both from East Lansing).
